@White Power: WP, you reference the passage where Jesus is talking about the divisiveness of the truth of His Gospel, which pits family members against each other. This is a fulfillment of Micah 7, which He was alluding to. The commands in the Sermon On The Mount are universal and unambiguous and an expansion on the Ten Commandments; why? Because the indwelling of the Holy Spirit gives us an advantage over the Old Testament followers, which was an external system, hence the civil and ceremonial Laws, which were eventually abolished on the cross (Ephesians 2:15).

That's why physical adultery became spiritual adultery and physical murder became spiritual murder. We find the reasoning here:

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. - Ezekiel 36:26-27

The Israelites couldn't keep the Ten Commandments for this reason and were constantly making trips to the temple for sacrificial atonement. The Ten Commandments were like a mirror that could show us our dirty faces but not be able to clean them until Christ completed His work and instituted the New Covenant:

Before this faith came, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. So the law became our guardian to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. - Galatians 3:23-25
