Ants can be very destructive... Our neighbours across the street had a whole wall removed from there house during renovations and it was full of carpenter ants.
My wife learned to pour boiling water (a few litres) on the flying ant hills/nests we have here. It works well. I wouldn't put boiling water on trees or plants though.
Years ago I saw a video were this guy poured molten aluminium down into an ant nest then he removed it once it cooled, it looked like an aluminum tree pulled out from the ground. I'll see if I can find it and post it on here.
