I hold a ball up iin line with the moon for comparison. The part of the ball in shadow is always visable and definable yet the part of the moon in shadow is not. It is the same color as the background.
That's because the moon is made of a luminescent plasma; not solid rock.
I think this becomes very clear the closer you look at it.
