I know of the Quatro but do not know the mechanics behind it. However, when it comes to dead simplicity and reliability, torsen-style differentials like eaton truetrac are a thing of beauty. 100% meachanical, economical, no wear parts, no special oils or friction modifiers that could become hard to get, no actuators to break, no odd handling behaviors on high-traction surfaces... Just clever helical gear reduction bias.

Also only engages when traction is lost. If a wheel completely loses traction, a light application of the brakes will provide enough resistance to engage, then you're off! Military has long used them for same reasons above.
