Once the reactor at Dimona ran in the startup phase, Israelis took over operations from the French in either 1963 or 1964. “Excavation for the co-located reprocessing plant for extracting plutonium from the reactor’s blanket material began in 1963, construction ended in about 1965 and the first production of separated plutonium occurred in 1966.”
